This is the history of the LOVEGROVE family that originated with the marriage of Joseph LOVEGROVE and Phillis BRIDGES in Drayton Beauchamp, Bucks, on 1804Mar27. Their family stayed in the Drayton Beauchamp/Buckland/Aston Clinton area for about 100 years before moving outwards to various places but principally Tring and Fulham.
This family history is based on information supplied by many different people. Some of the information contained is word of mouth or family rumour, and some is based on on factual records -and it is not always clear which is which.

#13 Joseph LOVEGROVE died of inflammation of the chest on 1844Jan26 at Buckland. His death certificate gave his age as 61, and described him as an agricultural labourer. His death was registered by Lydia GREEN, who had been present at the death. The entry for him in the Buckland burial register gives his age as 64, rather than 61. He was buried on 1844Jan28.
Joseph married Phillis BRIDGES by licence at Drayton Beauchamp on 1804March27, their witnesses being George HUMPHREY and William CHAPPIN.

Thomas married Mary FAULKNER on 1827Nov11 in Hemel Hempstead (his name was recorded as "Joseph" at the time, although it is not clear whether or not he was actually calling himself that). She may have been the Mary LOVEGROVE who was a witness at the marriage on 1836Dec15 of Thomas's brother James to Ann HIGGS, where she signed her name. She died of cancer of the stomach on 1839Jun01 at Aston Dean, Aston Clinton; her death certificate describes her as being the "wife of Thomas LOVEGROVE, Agricultural Labourer." They had five children, Lucy, Leah, Zilpha, Jacob and Reuben.
The 1851 Census shows Thomas living in Church End, Buckland, together with Jacob, Rubin and Lucy. He was 47 years old, and was an agricultural labourer. He had been born in Drayton Beauchamp.

In the 1883, 1887, 1891, 1895, 1903 and 1907 Kelly's Directories for Aylesbury, Reuben is listed as a beer retailer. On Emma's marriage certificate he is described as a Haybinder (1882); on Sidney Albert's as a Publican (1894); on Frederick's as a Labourer (1896). Reuben was a witness at Frederick's marriage, and signed his name.
On 1899May23, the Aston Clinton Parish Council held a meeting to allot allotments and smallholdings, not exceeding 3 acres, to labouring inhabitants of the parish. There were 5 labourers anxious to take the land at Stanbridge so lots were drawn; the winners were Reuben LOVEGROVE and Fred BRACKLEY. The Meadow Land or Minshull was next, and William and Walter BURNHAM agreed to take the meadow nearest to College Road between them. Thistley Forest went to Joseph THORNTON, Thomas CLARK, George READ, Joseph PARKER and Henry WEEDON. The Clerk was then directed to interview F.READ and George HAWKINS concerning dividing the far Meadow between them.
Reuben held this land for seven years. On 1906Feb12, on page 143 of the Parish Council minute book, there appeared the short entry headed "LOVEGROVE's Land":
It was proposed by Councillor BALLARD and seconded by Councillor PIPER and carried "That no steps be taken in letting LOVEGROVE's land till he be given proper notice".
This was followed, on 1906Apr17, by a similarly-headed entry which read:
The Clerk reported that Mr Reuben LOVEGROVE has given proper notice to terminate his tenance on the 29th day of September next. The Clerk was directed to advertise the land to be let.

An unidentified newspaper article refers to the death of Sarah Elizabeth as follows:-
The village of Corsley has learnt with profound regret of the death of Mrs Sarah Elizabeth HOWE, who had resided in the village for eighteen years, with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Arthur CHAPMAN. She came to Corsley in 1924 after the death of her husband and during that time had endeared herself with all whom she came into contact with. Of a happy disposition she was much loved by the children and at Great Kimble Church, Princes Risborough, where the funeral took place, the chancel steps were decorated by children. Mrs HOWE died at Corsley on Friday at the age of 79. She was taken to Princes Risborough on Wednesday, being interred in the grave of her late husband. The service was taken by the local vicar (the Rev HANSON). Besides the family mourners a large number of friends attended. The beautiful floral tributes were a token of the respect in which she was held. Our readers will join with us in extending sympathy with the family and relatives in their loss. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. G.BUSH and Co., Warminster. The relatives of the late Mrs HOWE desire to return thanks for sympathy shown them in their bereavement.

The story is that he retired at the very early age of 45 and spent the rest of his time gardening, and doing small jobs in the village. It is certainly the case that in 1917, when he would have been exactly 45, he is described on a birth certificate as being a General Labourer.
At the time of the marriage of one of his sons, in 1922, Sidney Albert was described as a Builder's Labourer. He is said to have dug the well at Hurst, thus providing the village with its first clean water. He is remembered by a grandson -who visited him once or twice a year in the late 1950's- as being a large, fit and very active man who was severely deaf. He did not tell his own son much about the family.
Sidney Albert used to talk about how his father, Reuben, put him out of the family home at the age of 11 with a clean collar to make his own way in the world.
Sidney Albert died at Hill House Hospital, Ramsgate, on 1964Sep07. His death certificate shows his address as 11 All Saints Avenue, Margate. In 1851, she was living with her brothers, John and George, sister Sarah, and niece, Hannah. This was in Chaple Row, Buckland. Mary, John and Sarah were all described by the Census enumerator as Def an Dum. Mary was the Head of the Household; she was 41, and had been born in Buckland.
In 1861, she was still living with John and Sarah (George had married in 1856), and with an 18-year-old niece, whose name was given as Mary.
There is a mystery, here, since in December 1843 two burials were recorded in the parish register, of Hannah and Mary, each of whom was described as being Niece of D & D's. 1843 was, of course, the year in which the nieces recorded in these censuses were born. No such deaths were registered in 1843 or 1844, but the birth of a Hannah was registered in the Aylesbury Registration District earlier in 1843. It looks as if their baptisms had been entered in the burial register by mistake.

However, this should not be taken too seriously since his sisters Mary and Sarah were both recorded as being his daughters, despite the fact that Mary was put down as being two years older than he, and Sarah as being only 4 years younger. There may have been some communications difficulties. He was recorded as being 48 years old (which is correct) and an agricultural labourer.

Sarah was 32 years old, unmarried, and a strawplaiter. Although the age does not match, there is little doubt that Sarah is the "37" year old, unmarried sister of George, who was living with him at Gates Cottage, Buckland in 1881. She was deaf and dumb.
In 1843, the death occurred of Hannah who was described, in the burial register, as being the Niece of D & D's. It is likely that the D & D's referred to were Sarah and George, and that their niece was living with them. It is not at present known who Hannah was the daughter of.
